Rhino Daily Challenge – Maths

Sitting Round the Party Tables

So, you are at the party and sitting around the table with seven friends.
 8 roundSq
At the top left-hand corner is the friend who is giving the party. She or he has a bag of sweets and starts giving them out in a clockwise direction: one for themselves, two for the next person and three for the next and so on.
8 sweets
There are other similar parties going on at the same time. They have bigger square tables with more children sitting round on each side.
Explore and compare all the tables: Start with 2 on each side as pictured and then, 3 on each side, 4 on each side and 5 on each side.
Can you work out:
  1. The total number of sweets that children sitting opposite each other have?
  2. The total number of sweets needed for each size of the table?
  3. The total number of sweets belonging to children who are diagonally opposite?
Can you spot any patterns?
Extension:
What about five- and six-sided tables?

Highlights From Home Y5&6 – Monday 6th July 2020

Today, the Y6 children were planning and preparing a short video for their ‘Zoom’ leavers service, whilst the Y5s were focusing their English on reading. In maths, the Y6s were revising their understanding of solving the ‘volume’ or cubes or cuboids, and the Y5s were demonstrating an understanding of ‘timetables’. This afternoon, the children have been working towards producing an ancient Greek mosaic of their choice.

Here’s what some of the children have been producing at home today……

Panda Class Home Learning w/c 6th July 2020

Panda Class Home Learning w/c 6th July 2020

What a busy week we’ve had again – it has been really good to see everyone’s work.  Keep it going.  Thank you for your support with your children at home and in school.

In Maths this week we are looking at capacity.  If it’s sunny (fingers crossed!) you could do some of these activities outside with some bottles or containers of different sizes.  The following links are for worksheets and activities.

This week in English we are reading the story of Super Tato! You can find a video of the story here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QlaMeNmTG6c

We are going to be re-writing the story and changing what happens in Super Tato’s adventures! Perhaps you could create a story map for this story or come up with your own version of events – perhaps different fruit and veg and different problems!  Don’t forget to illustrate your stories.

As well as making a story we are going to be making ‘wanted’ posters to help catch the culprit – The Evil Pea! You can find the link here…

Expectations by the end of EYFS- Early Learning Goals       (in an ideal world…)

Reading– Children read and understand simple sentences. They use phonic knowledge to decode regular words and read them aloud accurately. They also read some common irregular words. They demonstrate understanding when talking with others about what they have read.

Activities- Regular reading at home, looking for signs, having a go at reading anything around you!

Writing– Children use their phonic knowledge to write words in ways which match their spoken sounds. They also write some irregular common words. They write simple sentences which can be read by themselves and others. Some words are spelt correctly and others are phonetically plausible.

Activities- practice writing words and sentences using anything around such as chalk, whiteboard pens; it doesn’t just have to be pencil and paper! You could write letters, label pictures, write stories; it can be totally up to the child’s interest!

Number– Children count reliably with numbers from one to 20, place them in order and say which number is one more or one less than a given number. Using quantities and objects, they add and subtract two single-digit numbers and count on or back to find the answer. They solve problems, including doubling, halving and sharing.

Activities- Counting forward and backwards, looking for and recognising numbers (especially up to 20) anywhere around you, hunting for numbers, one more, one less than a particular number.

Shape, Space and Measure– Children use everyday language to talk about size, weight, capacity, position, distance, time and money to compare quantities and objects and to solve problems. They recognise, create and describe patterns. They explore characteristics of everyday objects and shapes and use mathematical language to describe them.

Activities- hunting for shapes in your home, garden, daily walk, comparing the height, weight, size of objects, making your own pattern, you could draw a pattern, paint a pattern, and make a pattern using objects in your home.

There are some great activities on Pintrest for Super Tato   Enjoy.

If you need any more resources please feel free to message me or, alternatively, have a look back on previous weeks’ posts.

Take care and have a good week.

Mandy Turner

Health and Safety Policy

Thank you for drawing our attention to the fact that an out of date H&S policy was appearing on the school website.

We have now uploaded the current one which will be reviewed, as usual, during the Autumn Term.

Please be assured that this was an administrative error and the policy is reviewed annually by the School Governors.

Working From Home (and school) Y5&6 – Friday 3rd July 2020

Well done to all of the Y6s this week who have completed / will have completed their Corbet School (English&Science) transition tasks. The Time Capsule activity is to be taken with them when they start there in September, however, I shall collect in all of the Science tasks tomorrow and take them to the Corbet School myself to hand to the Science teachers. If you have been working from home, please find a way of dropping them into school so that I’ve got all 15 to take together.

Other news: Reading Books

If your child has got any school reading books at home, please can you return them to school by the end of next week. There will be a box in the reception area for you to drop them into.

Other news: End of year reports

You shall receive a copy of your child’s end of year report tomorrow via the Class Dojo page.

Other news: School books

All the children’s books from the beginning of this year can now go home with the pupils. They can be collected from the reception area of school. We shall be keeping the most current book of the Y5 pupils (and some Y6 pupils) though for evidence for the next teacher to view and for any future inspections. If your Y5 child has been working in their books at home, please make sure that the children bring their most current book back with them in September. The Y6s who have been working at home can keep all of their books at home.

Other news: Kahoot Family Fun Quiz

There shall be 1 final Kahoot Family Fun Quiz this weekend so, if you would like to take part, let me know whether you would prefer the Friday or the Saturday and I shall send you the link.
