Panda Class Home Learning Friday 22nd January

Hi Pandas!  Happy Friday…

Thank you so much for your wonderful work and great effort you put into it.  I realise how hard it is to be motivated – especially three weeks in – but you are doing a great job!

Today we will focus on catching up and trying some other activities.  Like last Friday, we can do lots of lovely Friday things…

Jigsaws, board games, play word games; try the ‘Tell Me More’ game, escape in a good book or comic, how about building a den somewhere with some sheets and cushions, the possibilities are endless. If you need some more suggestions or fancy a challenge try the following:

Can you ask your child to tell you the sounds in the set they are working on.  If you point to each sound in turn, then ask them which sound it is.  If they know if securely, straight away then tick it off.  If they are not sure (which is fine) then you know these are the ones to focus on.  If you are on Set 3, you can access Mrs Suthers on YouTube, she has lessons which cover all of the sounds in that set. I will put a link to one of her lessons then that will guide you to the other sounds too. These are good as extra practice when the Ruth Miskin Live Lessons have been taken down.

Year 1 Maths – This week we are consolidating what we know about Addition & Subtraction. The link is to a variety of questions designed to assess if the children have remembered the strategies needed to answer questions covered in recent learning.

Panda Class Home Learning Friday 15th January

Friday 15th January 2021

What a busy week! It’s been filled with positive Panda moments and lots of amazing work as a result.  Thank you for all of your hard work and effort – it can’t be easy juggling all of life’s commitments and home schooling.

I will send a link (on Class Dojo) to a PowerPoint which is a celebration of the wonderful work Pandas have produced over the last week. I’ve really enjoyed seeing what you’ve been doing. You should all feel very proud!

I would like to have today as a chance to catch up on the tasks you haven’t managed to fit into the week so far. There might be a couple of pieces of work you need to go back to; or something you wanted to spend longer doing, or just have a rest!

I hope you can make it to our Panda Class Zoom session at 2pm Friday 15th.  (Again, I will send the meeting ID on Class Dojo)  If children have anything they would like to show or share then they can have a go.  Initially I expect they will be a bit ‘star struck’ when they see their friends, so we will have to see how it goes.

Writing – Positive Thinking is so important, especially at the moment, so here are some tasks with positivity in mind. Year 1 use your neatest writing and push yourself to use adjectives and a range of punctuation (!?,). Reception you can draw on your sheet and a grown up can write what you say or you can write too if you want to stretch yourself.

Challenge – How many ice cubes can you stand in a tower before it falls over? To make it even harder perhaps use tweezers or tongs to pick them up. Good luck! Take a photo and count how many ice cubes are in your tallest tower.

Please encourage your child to read the questions independently, then ask them what needs to be done (try and avoid telling them what needs to be done so that they have some thinking time). If they need some more support perhaps draw a number line for them to work with.  We do not use formal column methods for addition or subtraction in Year 1.

In English today we are going to read the PowerPoint about the life of Christopher Columbus. You may need to support your child with some of the reading. Discuss the key facts; his age when he began, the method of travel, what it would have been like on board and where he went for example.

Then, use the comprehension sheets to answer the questions.  Refer back to the PowerPoint and point to the facts that are needed to answer the question. When complete read the sheet in full to make sure that the answers match the questions.

Maths – Using positional language

Start the session by playing a game of ‘Simon Says’. Ask your child to put their hands ‘on top’ of their head, ‘under’ their feet, ‘behind them’, ‘in front of them’, ‘above’ their head.

Draw and cut out a penguin, like the one in the story.  Use this to take turns placing it in locations around the room. Chat to your child about where it is. Use the positional language to describe where it is.  Ask your child to talk about its position and use the positional language in this context. ‘The penguin is under the cushion.’

You could hide the penguin and ask your child to guess where it could be, ask them to put their guess in to a sentence, ‘Is the penguin behind the book?’

After watching/reading the story of Lost & Found can you create a missing poster for a missing pet? Hopefully, you have never lost a pet so you will have to imagine that you have and create a missing poster with some important writing on it to describe, in detail, what type of pet people are looking for. You will need to use:

  • Adjectives to describe what your pet looks like. For example, ‘Flopsy, my rabbit has long, warm ears.
  • Conjunctions to join your ideas within your sentence, for example, ‘Winston has ginger fur but he has a large patch of white fur on is long tail. Use: and, but, so.
  • Neat letters, capitals and full stops.
