Mirror, mirror….

This week in science the children in Rhino Class investigated the reflections.

They were set a number of challenges to complete, each using a mirror to create reflections.

They had to write a secret mirror message, complete a mirror maze and generate multiple reflections using a hinged mirror. The children were really surprised when what seemed to be so simple at first, turned out to be really difficult. The children great fun and certainly improved their level of concentration.

Stone Age Research

Today, Rhino class carried out some research to find out how people during the Stone Age period hunted.

The children were not allowed to use the internet so they had to use some information texts instead. This was great, as the children now know how to use a contents, an index and a glossary.

The children used the information they gathered to create information pages and booklets of their own.

Great learning everyone!

Sunshine and Shadows

Today in science, Rhino class investigated shadows.

We carried an experiment to see how we could make a shadow move using a torch. We placed a glue stick in a central position and observed how the torch needed to be moved in order to make the shadow meet specific lines which surrounded the central point. At times this wasn’t what the children thought, so some good learning took place.

We also looked at our own shadows that we create in the sunshine. We even measured how much a shadow moved and changed shape during the afternoon.

Great fun was had by all.

Super Science

Today in Rhino class, the children were introduced to their new science topic of light.

As well as assessing prior learning and composing learning questions, the children took part in an experiment to find out how light travels in straight lines.

They had to place some classroom objects in a cardboard box and then gradually increase the number of pencil holes until the objects could be seen. We even shone a torch in some of the holes to see which objects were illuminated.

The children worked well together and certainly had lots of fun.

Frog Club – Mental Maths

Today we have introduced a maths programme called Frog Club in Rhino class.  This is an initiative that encourages children to have faster recall of number facts. The programme starts with the 10 club and goes through to 99 club and then onto Superstars Division and Superstars Fractions.

By learning these number facts, we really hope that this programme will help your child carry out calculations more easily as they learn to use and apply their knowledge.

Each week, on a Friday, the children will have 5 minutes to complete the test for the club they have been assigned. In order to move on to the next club, they must answer all questions correctly in the time.

Below is a list of all the clubs and the content covered in each.

You can help your child at home by practising fast recall of the number facts in each club.  Click on the link to access each test.

Rhino Daily Challenge – Aliens

Today’s final challenge if the term should be fun. Today I would like to design and write about your own alien.

You can use the finger and hand print guide below or completely design and draw your own alien.

Hand and Foot Print Aliens

After you have finished your artwork, I would like to create a fact file on your alien. As well as coming with a unique name, try and think of some interesting sub headings to  write information about. Such as: home planet, special powers, unique features, diet, a day in the life of, amazing fact etc etc.

Have fun everyone and enjoy your last challenge before the summer break.

Rhino Daily Challenge -Space Rockets

Today’s daily challenge is to discover how rockets get into space. Below is a link to the BBC bitesize website where there are 3 educational videos to watch and 2 activities to complete.

Rhino Class – Learning Project WEEK 14 (13th July- 17th July) – Space

Hello,

Well, I cannot believe that this is the final week of not just the term, but the school year. I must say, this has been one of the most challenging and strange school years I have ever experienced and really do hope that things will return to normal very soon. It has certainly been a challenge to provide work on line for all to access as well as support children in the classroom at the same time.

Therefore, I would like to pass on my gratitude to all of you for the way you have supported your children’s learning at home during this time. It has been wonderful see all the learning that has been completed and I know a number of children have really flourished and progressed well with the amount of support they have been receiving at home. Thank you so much for all your efforts.

I wish you all a restful and safe summer holiday. I certainly think this year we have all earned it.

So for the final time this year, here are all the links for this week’s learning. As well as completing some of these activities, it is important to read daily and practise your x tables as much as possible.

Please click on the link below to access the Rhino Class Learning Project for this week:

Rhino Class Learning Project – Week 14- SPACE

This week’s project again includes weekly tasks for Maths, Reading, Writing and Spellings and a cross-curricular / topic project. All web links and instructions are included in the document. The timetable is just a suggestion and activities do not necessarily need to be completed in that order. However, try to complete as many of the tasks as you can during the week.

Friday is a PD day at school, however I have included work for the Friday just in case your children fancy doing a full week of learning 😉

Use the links below for some Reading Comprehension Activities link to this week’s theme:

Comet Neowise,  is going to be visible with the naked eye from anywhere in the UK for the rest of July, astronomers say.

Formally named C/2020 F3 , the comet was first spotted by the NEOWISE space telescope on March 27 and will reach its closest point to Earth on July 23.

Can you spot it? What other information can you find about this comet?

Weekly spellings – please access the spellings to learn this week below. This week is week 6. Practise during the week with a test at the end of the week. Try putting the words into sentences too to ensure understanding of each word.
