Research and Booklet Making

This week, pupils in Rhino Class have been learning about the prehistoric settlement of Skara Brae.

Click on the link below to look at a presentation all about Skara Brae:

Skara Brae Stone Age Information Powerpoint

They have watched videos and read information texts to find out about: when it was made, how it was discovered and what we now know about the people who lived there. To display what they learnt, pupils have made information booklets of their own.

They have worked hard and have really enjoyed conducting their research.

Mirror, mirror….

This week in science the children in Rhino Class investigated the reflections.

They were set a number of challenges to complete, each using a mirror to create reflections.

They had to write a secret mirror message, complete a mirror maze and generate multiple reflections using a hinged mirror. The children were really surprised when what seemed to be so simple at first, turned out to be really difficult. The children great fun and certainly improved their level of concentration.

Stone Age Research

Today, Rhino class carried out some research to find out how people during the Stone Age period hunted.

The children were not allowed to use the internet so they had to use some information texts instead. This was great, as the children now know how to use a contents, an index and a glossary.

The children used the information they gathered to create information pages and booklets of their own.

Great learning everyone!

Sunshine and Shadows

Today in science, Rhino class investigated shadows.

We carried an experiment to see how we could make a shadow move using a torch. We placed a glue stick in a central position and observed how the torch needed to be moved in order to make the shadow meet specific lines which surrounded the central point. At times this wasn’t what the children thought, so some good learning took place.

We also looked at our own shadows that we create in the sunshine. We even measured how much a shadow moved and changed shape during the afternoon.

Great fun was had by all.

Super Science

Today in Rhino class, the children were introduced to their new science topic of light.

As well as assessing prior learning and composing learning questions, the children took part in an experiment to find out how light travels in straight lines.

They had to place some classroom objects in a cardboard box and then gradually increase the number of pencil holes until the objects could be seen. We even shone a torch in some of the holes to see which objects were illuminated.

The children worked well together and certainly had lots of fun.

Frog Club – Mental Maths

Today we have introduced a maths programme called Frog Club in Rhino class.  This is an initiative that encourages children to have faster recall of number facts. The programme starts with the 10 club and goes through to 99 club and then onto Superstars Division and Superstars Fractions.

By learning these number facts, we really hope that this programme will help your child carry out calculations more easily as they learn to use and apply their knowledge.

Each week, on a Friday, the children will have 5 minutes to complete the test for the club they have been assigned. In order to move on to the next club, they must answer all questions correctly in the time.

Below is a list of all the clubs and the content covered in each.

You can help your child at home by practising fast recall of the number facts in each club.  Click on the link to access each test.

Rhino Daily Challenge – Aliens

Today’s final challenge if the term should be fun. Today I would like to design and write about your own alien.

You can use the finger and hand print guide below or completely design and draw your own alien.

Hand and Foot Print Aliens

After you have finished your artwork, I would like to create a fact file on your alien. As well as coming with a unique name, try and think of some interesting sub headings to  write information about. Such as: home planet, special powers, unique features, diet, a day in the life of, amazing fact etc etc.

Have fun everyone and enjoy your last challenge before the summer break.

Rhino Daily Challenge -Space Rockets

Today’s daily challenge is to discover how rockets get into space. Below is a link to the BBC bitesize website where there are 3 educational videos to watch and 2 activities to complete.

Have fun….
