‘Growing and learning in the love of God’
Religious Education Intent:
At Myddle CE Primary School, we aim for outstanding quality teaching of Religious Education, which is informed, thoroughly prepared and sets the premise that children feel they may question issues and express their belief in secure surroundings with the knowledge that their views are respected and encouraged. At our school good quality teaching of RE makes an important contribution to spiritual, moral, social and cultural awareness through the content taught and the approaches used.
The children at Myddle are encouraged to reflect upon and explore their own religious belief as well as discussing other’s opinions and beliefs. We feel children may realise or deepen their own beliefs and respect the freedom of other people to hold beliefs different from their own.
Religious Education at our school is not restricted to the mere study of facts and practices. We provide links with real lives and facilitate opportunities for involvement/experience of creative and practical aspects of religious belief. We recognise that religious experience and belief are a living, on-going phenomenon continuing every day, realising RE is a glimpse or a window into the way people live their lives, the beliefs they have, and their daily worship. It is not just a closed book at the end of the session; it is living, continuing all the time.

We aim to enable the children to:
- reflect upon their own beliefs
- reflect upon the experiences and mysteries of life and to recognise the significance of awe and wonder in religious belief
- develop an understanding and knowledge of Christian beliefs in a way that relates directly to their lives
- learn from religious and ethical teaching enabling reasoned and informed judgements on religious moral issues
- recognise and respect the religious moral choices of others
- develop a respect and understanding of other religions, cultures and traditions
- be confident to challenge and be challenged through informed discussion
- develop a caring attitude to members of the school community and to the wider community
- develop a sense of responsibility towards the environment
Implementation:
Understanding Christianity – Programme of Study:
RE lessons are planned and delivered using this programme of study, sourced and provided by the Church of England. It is used to help all teachers support pupils in developing their own thinking and their understanding of Christianity, as a contribution to their understanding of the world and their own experience within it. We aim to see pupils leave school with a coherent understanding of Christian beliefs and practices as they explore the significant theological concepts within Christianity as part of developing their wider religious, theological and cultural literacy. To further support the teaching of RE and the delivery of learning about other faiths, The Understanding Christianity Programme of Study is taught in conjunction with the Shropshire Agreed Syllabus for RE (SACRE).

Shropshire Agreed Syllabus 2021 -26
We also use the Shropshire Agreed syllabus for RE (SACRE) which outlines what is necessary to be taught in RE in schools across Shropshire, giving teachers the relevant guidance and pedagogical knowledge to deliver RE effectively. The new syllabus coincides directly with the National Curriculum and supports the structure of RE lessons and teaching accordingly for a progressive approach to RE and other Faiths.

The Diocese of Litchfield:
The Governing Body acknowledges the important contribution to be made by the Diocese of Lichfield’s “Resource Handbook for R.E. in Church Schools” in supporting this implementation.
