What is PSHE Education?

Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) Education is an important part of our curriculum at Myddle CE Primary School. It helps children develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy and safe, build positive relationships, manage their lives now and in the future, and prepare for life in modern Britain.

Through PSHE, we aim to support pupils’ personal development and promote their spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development. Our curriculum also supports pupils to understand and respect the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE)

Relationships Education and Health Education are statutory parts of the curriculum for primary-aged pupils.

Our teaching follows the Department for Education’s Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education statutory guidance, revised for September 2026.

Through Relationships Education, children learn about areas including families and relationships, friendships, respectful relationships, online relationships and how to keep themselves safe.

Health Education supports pupils to understand their physical and mental wellbeing and includes learning about healthy lifestyles, mental wellbeing, online safety, basic first aid and the changing adolescent body.

At primary school, Sex Education beyond the requirements of the National Curriculum for Science is not compulsory. Where additional age-appropriate Sex Education is provided, this is clearly set out in our school policy and curriculum.

Our PSHE Curriculum

At Myddle CE Primary School, we use the PSHE Association Programme of Study and planning resources to provide a comprehensive, age-appropriate and progressive PSHE curriculum.

Our curriculum is organised around three core themes:

Health and Wellbeing – helping children understand how to look after their physical and mental health, recognise and manage emotions, make healthy choices and keep themselves safe.

Relationships – developing positive friendships and relationships, understanding families, recognising respectful and healthy relationships, managing conflict and learning how to seek help when needed.

Living in the Wider World – preparing children for life in their community and wider society, including learning about rights and responsibilities, economic wellbeing, careers, digital literacy and responsible citizenship.

Learning is carefully sequenced so that pupils revisit and build upon important knowledge and skills as they progress through school.

Safeguarding and Equality

PSHE and RSHE form an important part of our wider approach to safeguarding and preparing children for life beyond school.

Our curriculum reflects the requirements of Keeping Children Safe in Education 2026 and supports children to recognise risks, understand safe and unsafe situations, develop appropriate boundaries and know how and where to seek help.

Our teaching also reflects our responsibilities under the Equality Act 2010. Learning is inclusive, age-appropriate and respectful of the diverse families, backgrounds, beliefs and experiences represented within our school and wider society.

Working with Parents and Carers

We recognise that parents and carers are the first educators of their children and we value working in partnership with families.

Information about our PSHE and RSHE curriculum, including our Relationships and Sex Education policy and curriculum overview, is available on our website. We will communicate with and consult parents and carers where appropriate about the content and delivery of RSHE.

Our aim is to ensure that every child leaves Myddle with the knowledge, confidence and skills they need to build positive relationships, make informed choices, stay safe and healthy and contribute positively to their community.
