Rhino Daily Challenge – Writing

Can you write a Limerick?

A limerick is a silly poem with five lines.  They are often funny or nonsensical.  Limericks were made famous by Edward Lear, a famous author who wrote the “Book of Nonsense” in the 1800’s.  This was an entire book of silly limericks.

How to write a limerick:

The first, second and fifth lines rhyme with each other and have the same number of syllables (typically 8 or 9).
The third and fourth lines rhyme with each other and have the same number of syllables (typically 5 or 6)
Limericks often start with the line “There once was a…” or “There was a…”

Here are some examples about teachers:

There was a headmaster from Quebec,
Who wrapped both his legs round his neck,
But then he forgot,
How to untie the knot,
And now he’s an absolute wreck.
There once was a teacher from Leeds,
Who swallowed a packet of seeds,
In less than an hour,
Her nose was a flower,
And her hair was a bunch of weeds.
There was a young teacher from Harrow,
Whose nose was too long and too narrow,
It gave so much trouble,
That he bent it up double,
And wheeled it around school in a barrow.

Challenge:

Can you write some Limericks of your own?

Can you write a Limerick about yourself? There was a young man/lady called….

ZOOM CLASS MEETING

I would like to create the opportunity for you to see and speak to me and all of your classmates via a class zoom meeting, on Thursday 14th May in the afternoon around 2pm. During the meeting, I would also like you to share one of the limericks you have written.

If you are not familiar with zoom, it is quite easy to use and set up. Best way to start, is to ‘Google Search’ zoom and just follow the instructions. Many of you may have already used zoom and are probably more familiar with it than I am!

I will be sending out a link via Dojo for you to be able to join the meeting later on today. Can’t wait to see you all.

Phased return to school

Dear parents and carers,
Following the Prime Ministers announcement yesterday evening I’m sure you have many questions, as we do, that you would like clarifying. We found out the same information at the same time as you, so as you can imagine we have spent this morning trying to get some clarity.  I have met virtually with the headteachers from the other local primary schools and we will work closely on the next stage together. I will also be speaking to the Corbet to discuss year 6 transition.
At the moment we will continue to provide provision for our Key Workers as we are at the moment. We have not yet received any information to support us with this new plan to start a phased return for some of the year groups. We expect to receive information from the Department for Education and the Local Authority very soon.
Please be assured that the safety of our children, staff and school community is the key priority and we will only begin a phased return when we are 100% prepared.
As always, we will keep you updated but for now please do not worry. We will continue to provide online learning for our children, keep in contact with you and continue to support each other during these difficult and uncertain times.
Many thanks for your patience.

Snow Leopards 11th May 2020

Hello Snow Leopards,
I hope everyone is keeping well and you all had an enjoyable weekend celebrating VE Day on Friday. I had afternoon tea and cake in the sunshine!
Let me know if you did anything special to celebrate.

I understand that staying at home is challenging, especially for parents working from home too, but I hope everyone continues to keep busy and enjoy this time with your children. Please remember I’m here if anyone needs anything.

Please continue to refer to the links I posted in last weeks letter as they provide really important and fun activities to keep your little Snow Leopards busy!

A few other ideas for this week:

Panda Class Learning w/c 11th May 2020

Hi Pandas,

it was so lovely to see so many of you on the Panda Zoom session. I will schedule another one for Friday 15th May – I think I’ll set a challenge this time . Keep working hard. You’ve done lots of amazing things and should be very proud of yourselves. I am certainly very proud of you all.

Maths – This week the children use real objects to see that the quantity of a group can be changed by taking items away. Encourage the children to count all the items at the start, take away the required amount practically, and recount to see how many are left.
Use the first, then, now strategy to tell simple maths stories to practise taking away in familiar contexts.

First, there were 5 people on the bus
Then, 2 people got off the bus
Now, there are 3 people on the bus.

Your child could draw and colour a big red bus with windows – then place ‘people’ on/off the bus.

Other stories that involve numbers changing by adding or taking away are:
Kipper’s Toy Box by Mick Inkpen
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9rzP_HWtaBY

Incey Wincey Spider game (a lovely home – made game that you could recreate at home)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7SUpivcWBI

Maths songs – encourage your child to adapt and re-enact favourite rhymes such as 10 Green Bottles by making 1,2 or 3 fall each time. Similarly, they could have 10 Currant Buns and choose to buy 1,2, or 3 buns each time. Prompt them to say how many are left each time.

Hidden items game – Count out five cubes (any small item will work) Get your child to check that there are 5 objects so everyone knows there are 5. Cover the cubes with a cloth, check that your child is happy that there are still 5 under the cloth. Then, as they watch, take 2 cubes from under the cloth. Ask how many cubes there are now. Encourage them to tell you the First, Then, Now story.

BBC Numberblocks Series 5: Episode 2 ‘On your Head’ and Episode 14 ‘I can count to Twenty’ are good to re-enforce the concepts and numbers.

English

Reading  Lots of reading and listening to stories being read.

Writing  In writing this week encourage your child to think of things they like and then say the sentence out loud several times. Then say the sentence out loud and hold a finger up for every word. How many words in the sentence? Then begin to write the sentence saying it as they go along. So, for example: ‘I like walking in the park.’ The link below has some sheets to print off or you could write on plain paper, chalk on the path, painting, anything at all that can record the sentence. Encourage good letter formation and spaces between words.

Phonics  These are brilliant free resources that will really support your child’s phonic knowledge – I definitely recommend watching them.

Dinner Survey – Update

Thank you to those who recently returned the school dinner survey. We are trying very hard to make any improvements so if you missed completing the survey and would like to, please ask Mrs Smith in the office for another copy.

I am pleased to see that there are not many dislikes. I can answer those quite easily and hopefully put your mind at rest.

Some children complained about queuing. This is never an easy one to manage but at Myddle the children pre choose their meals which helps. As the numbers of children in school grow, there will inevitably be more children to serve. We do stagger the times they come in and I don’t think they do have to wait too long.

One comment was about the dirty floor and seats. I will ask the lunchtime supervisors to put this right as this is not acceptable.

Some commented about the size of the helpings. We do have to follow strict government guidance about portion control and the older children do get more. I realise that children come in different shapes and sizes though! Seconds are sometimes available. Portion size is a hard balancing act – we have to give them enough to get through the school afternoon but not so much that they fall asleep. If they are hungry when they get home, we have done our job properly!

The lunchtime supervisors do monitor how much your child has eaten. They are not allowed pudding until we are satisfied that they have eaten enough of their main course. It is actually harder to monitor packed lunches as children can hide food under wrappers etc before putting it in the bin.

Our whole menu meets strict nutritional guidelines and any pudding, apart from the odd treat, (and we all need one of those every now and again) is low in sugar and fat. There is always fruit salad, fruit and yogurt available too.

Every day there are at least 2 hot dishes, plus jacket, wraps, salad etc so there should be something for your child every day.

We are just about to introduce a new menu which Sara has been working on, please let us know what you think when we finally get back! The menu is always published on the website so you will know in advance what is on offer.

We will be re-introducing special menu days, plus parent/ carer/grandparent lunches so keep your eye out for the invitation.

Lastly I was asked to reduce the minimum amount payable on the gateway. The school pays a fixed charge for each transaction. By setting the minimum at this level, we have been able to avoid passing the charges onto you. I hope that makes sense. If you pay more than you need for the week, we carry forward the amount to the following week.

I hope I have answered all of your queries but please feel free to contact me via the school office or email address and I will be happy to discuss further.

Thank you very much for your continued support.

Snow Leopards 7th May 2020

Hi Snow Leopards,

Thank you so much for all of your updates last week. You are doing a fabulous job of keeping your children busy in the current circumstances. They are all doing really well and it’s great to see them working, playing and enjoying their time at home.

For those who wish to practise phonics activities and gain more understanding of Read Write Inc (phonics scheme followed throughout reception and ks1)
Please have a look at the activities and e-books below:

https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/api/interactives/29318.html
Following the link above is the set 1 sounds we have been practising in nursery. There is a ‘Sound Pronunciation Guide Video’ available so you are correctly pronouncing the sounds

https://home.oxfordowl.co.uk/books/free-ebooks/
Be sure to check out the page ‘Kids’ activities’, there are lots of age appropriate, fun resources for your child to learn through the games and activities available.

Please continue to support the topic of Spring time. Perhaps find some pebbles in your gardens or out on a walk, when you get home see if you can make them into your favourite mini beast and then find out some fact about them!

Most of all enjoy the sunshine and explore outdoors. Maybe you could plant some seeds. What does your seed need in order for it to grow?

I hope you enjoy your week. I can’t wait to hear from you again and hear what you’ve been getting up to!

Again, please do not hesitate to get in touch if you need anything,

Jodie

Rhino Daily Challenge – Writing/Design

Watch the animation below….

It’s a great little animation and fun to watch, but there are a number of tasks that you can complete related to it.

Challenge: How many of these can you complete today and during this week at home?

  • Write a story – What happens next?
  • Write a diary entry from the point of view of the alien, you can even make up your own name for him.
  • Write a letter of complaint to Levitation International
  • Write a set of instructions for how to use a Hoverbike properly
  • Create an information booklet for a Hoverbike. What is good about? How does it work? Why does it need to hover?
  • Design an advert for a Hoverbike. Why should you buy one?
  • Design and label your own futuristic vehicle (This could be on paper or powerpoint)

Can you think of another activity inspired by this video. Maybe we can challenge others to do the same?
