Panda Class Home Learning w/c 6^th July 2020

What a busy week we’ve had again – it has been really good to see everyone’s work.  Keep it going.  Thank you for your support with your children at home and in school.

In Maths this week we are looking at capacity.  If it’s sunny (fingers crossed!) you could do some of these activities outside with some bottles or containers of different sizes.  The following links are for worksheets and activities.

This week in English we are reading the story of Super Tato! You can find a video of the story here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QlaMeNmTG6c

We are going to be re-writing the story and changing what happens in Super Tato’s adventures! Perhaps you could create a story map for this story or come up with your own version of events – perhaps different fruit and veg and different problems!  Don’t forget to illustrate your stories.

Expectations by the end of EYFS- Early Learning Goals       (in an ideal world…)

Reading– Children read and understand simple sentences. They use phonic knowledge to decode regular words and read them aloud accurately. They also read some common irregular words. They demonstrate understanding when talking with others about what they have read.

Activities- Regular reading at home, looking for signs, having a go at reading anything around you!

Writing– Children use their phonic knowledge to write words in ways which match their spoken sounds. They also write some irregular common words. They write simple sentences which can be read by themselves and others. Some words are spelt correctly and others are phonetically plausible.

Activities- practice writing words and sentences using anything around such as chalk, whiteboard pens; it doesn’t just have to be pencil and paper! You could write letters, label pictures, write stories; it can be totally up to the child’s interest!

Number– Children count reliably with numbers from one to 20, place them in order and say which number is one more or one less than a given number. Using quantities and objects, they add and subtract two single-digit numbers and count on or back to find the answer. They solve problems, including doubling, halving and sharing.

Activities- Counting forward and backwards, looking for and recognising numbers (especially up to 20) anywhere around you, hunting for numbers, one more, one less than a particular number.

Shape, Space and Measure– Children use everyday language to talk about size, weight, capacity, position, distance, time and money to compare quantities and objects and to solve problems. They recognise, create and describe patterns. They explore characteristics of everyday objects and shapes and use mathematical language to describe them.

Activities- hunting for shapes in your home, garden, daily walk, comparing the height, weight, size of objects, making your own pattern, you could draw a pattern, paint a pattern, and make a pattern using objects in your home.

Hi Pandas,

We’ve all had another busy week with lots of amazing work and activities.  Some people have been baking: a rather yummy looking chocolate cake; some people have done some amazing writing; some people have sent videos of super reading; some people have been growing things too.  Our cress experiment was interesting.  We found that cress will grow virtually anywhere! Even, we found, in a dark cupboard!  We noticed that the only thing it needed for growth was water.  The best result was when we grew it in cotton wool on a sunny window ledge.

This week’s learning…

This week in maths we are looking at Length, height and distance. Children should begin to use the language to describe length and height, e.g. the tree is tall, the pencil is short.  When making direct comparisons, they may initially say something is big or bigger than something else. Encourage them to use more specific mathematical vocabulary relating to length (longer/shorter), height (taller/shorter), and breadth (wider/narrower).  Opportunities for comparing length or height will arise naturally through talk and play in the natural environment/out and about.

In English we are reading the story of ‘A Magical Muddle’.

We are going to find natural items, thinking carefully about what we know is not safe to pick. We are going to use our items to make a potion! What kind of potion would you choose to make? Perhaps a potion to make you invisible, make you fly or turn yourself into a mermaid!

Before we get stuck into making our potions we are going to write instructions so we don’t forget what went in. For example:

1. Put 4 petals into the bowl.
2. Add 3 crushed green leaves.
3. Mix in 2 drops of rainwater.
4. Stir in a pinch of glitter.

Phonics – Children should aim to be secure in reading all set 1 and 2 sounds and be able to read and write all set one and two ‘red’ (tricky) words that cannot be decoded. The link below is to the Read Write Inc website Oxford Owls.

Reading – Please read regularly: books, e-books, notices and signs when you are out and about.

This week we are going to have a go at making our own special magic wands to go with the potions we are creating.  If you can find a stick and have a go at making your own wand, you could make it extra special by adding some ribbon, glitter, paper, string or any other bits and pieces your child thinks will look nice.

Hello Panda Parents,

We’ve all been working so hard this week: at home and at school, in our bubbles.  Well done and a big thank you to all.

Maths – This week in maths we are looking at halving and odd / even numbers.  Collect an even number of small items, count them so you both know how many there are at the start. Perhaps use some food for a teddy bears picnic.  Have 2 plates and share the food out equally. Make sure the sharing is fair.  Then progress this to start with an odd number of items and talk about what happens when you have shared fairly but there is a left over, this must mean we started with an odd number of items. Talk about odd and even numbers. Encourage your child to draw pictures to record their findings. Children could build towers with odd and even numbers of bricks, again, draw what they have found out and discuss odd and even numbers. ‘An odd number is a number that cannot be shared out fairly between 2 people.’

We can also complete any maths activity sheets from last week too – these are good to keep revisiting basic number operations.

Phonics – In phonics this week we are revising recognising and writing, correctly, all of the set one sounds.  I have sent a link to the set one sounds so you know which ones they are.  I have also added a video clip to see how the letters should be formed.  The correct letter formation is important to crack at an early age then children don’t start with habits which are hard to break later on in school.  Ultimately, the aim is for older children to have cursive handwriting and the correct formation is vital for this to be successful.

Hi Panda Class – I hope you have had a good week.  Our first week back at school went well.

All of the activities below are being done in school and will be fine for work at home too.

Maths – This week in maths in class we are recapping recognising and writing accurately our numbers to 20.
Then, there are a series of Maths Activity sheets which all involve working with numbers to 20 and other aspects of maths.

Please aim to complete all the sheets in a week. If your child does not like sitting to complete the work, by all means work practically where possible and use resources to hand to pose similar questions.

Reading – Please aim to read each day with your child. There are resources on Oxford Owls website if you have run out of books.

Phonics – Ruth Miskin’s Read Write Inc work is still being shown on line – the first lesson is at 9:30 am daily, but if you don’t see that one then they are usually available to view at another time. Please review all Set 1, 2 & 3 sounds. The aim is for your child to say the sound when shown and then to be able to have a go at writing the sounds accurately too.

Writing – As we are growing runner beans in school, I thought it would be nice to read the story of Jack and The Beanstalk with the children. The writing activity this week is to use the writing prompt pictures to think of a sentence, rehearse it, say it out loud and write the sentences about the pictures shown.

This week we are going to do a little bit of an experiment, we are going to grow some cress just like Mr Bloom! You can watch how to make his cress-head here

We are going to try growing cress in the shade, the sun, sand, cotton wool and soil. We are going to predict which cress will grow the best and check it each day to find out if we are right!
